Managing An Invasive Alien Species
Xenobiota Xposures

Yellow Starthistle, Wicked Weed of the West, Continues to Spread

Invasive alien species are assaulting our economy, public health and environment. By transforming large land areas, plant invasions in particular have become a major threat to California's natural heritage. One invader, yellow starthistle now infests well over ten million acres, ten percent of California. Displacing native species, draining precious water supplies, discouraging recreation, potentially deadly to horses, yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis) has exploded across millions of acres of oak woodlands, grasslands, and other areas of California in recent decades.

More public awareness about the problems of yellow starthistle and other invasive species will lead to a broader support for restoration projects, better protection of our parks and preserves, and a reduction of the weeds, pests and pathogens entering California.
